Team Horizon is seeking a Chief Medical Scientist – Clinical Chemistry for our client based in Kildare. The role of the Chief Medical Scientist is to manage the diagnostic Clinical Chemistry laboratory. The post holder will work in collaboration with the Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Laboratory Manager, Medical Scientists and laboratory staff.
What you will be doing:
- Participate in the future development of a Laboratory Service that supports the needs of healthcare professionals and their patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the Laboratory.
- Co-ordinate the clinical chemistry and immunoassay diagnostic service, in collaboration with Consultant Chemical Pathologist, Microbiologist and Laboratory Management team, to ensure patient results are delivered to the highest standard in a timely manner.
- Participate and discharge duties required to provide operational services within a multi-disciplinary laboratory/team.
- Lead the scientific staff within the department and ensure the appropriate skill mix in the laboratory to provide a safe and quality focused service.
- Participate in the maintenance of the ISO 15189 quality management system which ensures safe patient care.
- Maintain professional competency to work in accordance with the laboratory management system and act impartially and ethically in the discharge of duties.
- Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient information.
- Discharge duties in accordance with laboratory policies and be responsible for the quality of that work.
- Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities within the organisation.
- Encourage professional development of staff, through promoting self-learning, formal courses, or formal and/or informal on the job training.
- Develop, update and review policies, procedures, and guidelines for the department.
- Promote good communication within the team.
- Participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods aligned to strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Oversee validation and verifications of equipment and tests.
- Participate in costing methods for laboratory service to service users.
- Provide statistical and management information as requested by the Laboratory Manager, Operations Director or Consultant Chemical Pathologist in a timely manner.
- Motivate team members on a day-to-day basis, by agreeing goals and objectives, in keeping with organisational objectives.
- Complete staff probation reviews, annual individual performance reviews and personal development plans.
- Monitor and interpret quality, standards, accuracy of results, and participate in troubleshooting to resolve abnormalities, anomalies, and variations in results.
- Actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance programmes and co-operate in evaluating assays, equipment and consumables where required.
- Deputise for the Laboratory Manager as required.
- Comply with Health and Safety requirements as detailed in the Safety Statement and associated policies and procedures and to report any defects or tasks being carried out in an unsafe manner.
What you need to apply:
- BSc (minimum QQI Level 8) allied to the field of clinical science and laboratory medicine.
- Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU or eligible for CORU registration as a Medical Scientist.
- Eligible for membership of the ACSLM.
- Have previous experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory (at least 5 years) with 2 of those years in a senior role.
- Have experience working in clinical chemistry and blood sciences.
